The Fife Arms Hand-Crafted Glass Icicle Decorations

£60
Option:
Glass decorations sparkled amongst the branches of Victorian Christmas trees. First made in Lauscha, Germany, they were brought across by Prince Albert and gained popularity as Victorian Christmas celebrations became more extravagant. Lauscha is where interdisciplinary artist Carrie Fertig learned the art of flameworking from master craftsmen, and now makes her intricate glass icicles in her Aberdeenshire studio. As well as making individual icicles for decoration, she creates sound installations – extravagant works comprised of thousands of glass icicles, including one in the Veste Coburg, Prince Albert's original home. The icicles can be gently played to make music, creating a bell-like icy soundscape when moved by touch or breeze.

These icicles are bespoke to the Fife Arms – their complex forms are based on the topography, atmospheric conditions and flora of 12 distinct hills near the hotel. Made from borosilicate glass – of the type used for chemistry labware – they have a strength and stability that belies their delicate, fragile appearance.
Size: approx. 17cm (please note, length varies according to the style)

The hills on which the icicles are based are:

Meall an t-Slugain
Meikle Elrick
Morrone
Carn nan Sgliat
Creag a' Chleirich
Millstone Cairn
Creag nan Leachda
Creag Phàdruig
Carn na Drochaide
