Set of Three Hand-Woven Willow Baskets

£175

Hand-woven by Aberdeenshire based Helen Jackson, these small but beautiful baskets – each a different and unique shape – weave together very traditional techniques, once used for weaving heather, with a pared back modern aesthetic. The rims are formed by weaving the tips into a continuous spiral plait. This is then stitched to finish with waxed linen thread. Willow is the ultimate 'green' material – absorbing carbon as it grows and regenerating every year after harvest.

Perfect for displaying flowers on a spring table, or for keeping dressing-table or bathroom items.

MORE ABOUT

Helen Jackson

Helen Jackson – whose willow-work steer heads can be seen in The Farmer bedroom at The Fife Arms – uses traditional techniques of willow basketmaking while exploring new ideas and form. Using soft plant fibres to make baskets requires specialist skills, such as looping, coiling, twining and plaiting. To make these baskets, she has used one year’s growth willow rods, which are dried and then soaked before working to reduce shrinkage. The rims are formed by weaving the tips into a continuous spiral plait. This is then stitched to finish with waxed linen thread. Willow is the ultimate sustainable material, regenerating as it does every year. Helen is a member of the Scottish Basketmakers’ Circle, the Heritage Crafts Association and the Heckleburn Quines – an artist and makers’ collective based in Banchory, Aberdeenshire.
