Meet the Maker | Juju Books
Gillian Stewart’s handmade books are beautiful items in their own right.
After training in Design at Glasgow School of Art, Gillian worked in a small commercial bindery where she learnt the intricate craft of bookbinding. Winning a highly prestigious QEST Craft Scholarship allowed her to study with Master bookbinders across Europe where she honed her craft, beginning to create her own innovative techniques and unique style.
Back in Glasgow, she set up her own studio, Juju Books, in 2017, where she makes bespoke books for artists, designers and book lovers – as well as teaching her specialised craft to students.
Her Artist’s Concertina Sketchbook uses an ingenious folding technique that she has developed – the pages can be used whichever way you open the book. Her strong belief in sustainable production has led her use paper milled from recycled coffee cups to create the pages. Itself a work of art, her sketchbook – hand finished in with gold – elevates its contents into something different and extraordinary.
