The First Footing
Scottish folklore of first-footing (Scottish Gaelic: ciad-chuairt) tells that the first person to enter a house on New Year's Day is seen as a herald of fortune for the year to follow. The custom calls for a tall and dark-haired person to arrive bearing gifts such as coins, coal, shortbread and whisky, to represent prosperity, food, warmth and good cheer.
