Hand-Crafted Straw Mice Family

£85

In the Victorian era, straw – a cheap and readily available material – was used for Christmas decorations as well as for hats, bonnets and dress trimmings. These families of straw mice, intricately woven by Elaine Lindsay, also give a nod to the Victorian love of dolls houses and all things miniature. With their bright eyes and mischievous expressions, they will add some delightful humour to the festivities, peeking out from the branches of your tree or adorning your holiday tablescape.

Straw Working is on Heritage Craft's Red List of endangered crafts and Lindsay – who has been working with this sustainable material from her home in Aberdeenshire for over 40 years – is one of the few artisans keeping it alive. She uses heritage varieties of wheat grown by specialised growers and uses time-honoured techniques to create her pieces – the mice are made using a traditional spiral plait. Deeply knowledgeable about the history of this craft, she enjoys using the skills she has learnt to create more contemporary designs, making accessories for catwalk shows in New York, Paris and London and working with a number of London fashion houses.
